Sculptor-designer Mario Philippona

During his job as cabinetmaker in New York he encountered the American Organic Architecture. The works of Frank Lloyd Wright, Bruce Goff and younger architects like Bart Prince, Daniel Liebermann and James Hubbel fascinated him. He worked as architecture-apprentice and build organic design kitchens for Eugene Tsui. Mario studied at the San Francisco Institute of Architecture and at the Institute for Architectural Arts Development in Maassluis, the Netherlands. In 1993 he established his design and cabinetmaking shop in Maasland, the Netherlands. In his designs looking for ways to express his organic inspiration. The works are handcrafted from regional timber and finished with natural oil and wax. Mario uses the colors and textures of various types of hard woods to emphasize the forms.



Kunstenaar-Vormgever Mario Philippona

Mario is in 1960 geboren in Amsterdam. Werkte als timmerman, onderhoudsman bij een woningbouwvereniging, bouwde als vrijwilliger mee aan een school in Nicaragua en meubelmaker in New York. Hier kwam hij in aanraking met de Amerikaanse organische architectuur van  o.a. Frank Lloyd Wright en  Bruce Goff en besloot architectuur te gaan studeren aan het San Francisco Institute of Architecture. Later studeerde bij het Instituut voor Bouw-Kunst Ontwikkeling in Maassluis.
Door het starten van een meubelmakersbedrijf in 1993 kreeg Mario de mogelijkheid zijn ontwerpkwaliteiten verder te ontwikkelen. In zijn werk is hij op zoek naar manieren om organische inspiratie tot uitvoer te brengen. De meubels worden ambachtelijk gemaakt van voornamelijk inlands hout en afgewerkt met natuurlijke olie en bijenwas. Mario maakt gebruik van de verschillende kleuren en structuren van houtsoorten om de vormen te accentueren.
